Your hair
Measure from your scalp at the top of your head to the ends.
The average is about half an inch (1.3 cm) a month. Leave it there unless you have tracked your own.
Ask for a “dusting” or “just the ends” to keep this small.
Your result
You could reach your goal in about
15 months
Your estimated month shows here.
| Length to grow | 6 in |
| Real gain per month after trims | 0.41 in |
| Trims along the way | 5 |
| Length in 6 months | 10.5 in |
| Length in 1 year | 12.9 in |
Small, regular trims keep split ends from breaking further up, so you hold on to the length you grow.
An estimate only. Everyone’s hair grows at its own pace, and breakage can slow your progress.
How fast does hair grow?
On average, scalp hair grows about half an inch a month, or about 6 inches a year. That figure comes from the American Academy of Dermatology and is cited by Healthline and USA TODAY. Healthline also notes that no product can make hair grow faster than your natural rate. What you can control is how much length you keep.
How the math works
Months to your goal = length to grow ÷ (monthly growth − length trimmed per month)
Example: from 8 to 14 inches is 6 inches to grow. At half an inch a month, with a quarter inch trimmed every 12 weeks (about 0.09 inches a month), you gain about 0.41 inches a month. That is roughly 14 to 15 months, compared with 12 months with no trims at all.
Growing out tips
- Book trims that take off only the damaged ends, and tell your stylist you are growing it out.
- Go easy on heat: lower the iron temperature and use a heat protectant.
- Be gentle when hair is wet, and detangle from the ends up.
- Keep the ends conditioned with a mask or leave-in, especially on long or color-treated hair.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to grow hair to shoulder length?
It depends on where you start and how long your neck and shoulders are, so measure your goal on yourself and enter it above. At about half an inch a month, every 6 inches takes about a year.
Do trims make hair grow faster?
No. Hair grows from the scalp, not the ends. Trims remove split ends so they do not break further up, which helps you keep the length you grow.
Can I enter centimeters?
Yes. Tap Centimeters and the calculator converts your numbers.
